Tortoises are slow because they don’t need to get anywhere fast!

Because of their thick shell, they don’t need to escape predators – and because they only eat plants, they don’t need to be fast to hunt down their prey.

Basically, tortoises have adapted to survive in ways that don’t require speed, so it would be a waste of energy to hurry around!
