It depends on who will be funding the PhD and which country you are in. The organisation that fund me have given me 4 years to complete my PhD, but it varies between people.
Most PhDs in the UK take between 3 and 4 years to complete, but in the USA they are more likely to take 6 to 7 years! Ouch!
A PhD is a degree you can do at university after a undergraduate degree (the programme you would do after leaving school)
In a PhD you do research (not just science you can do it in any subject!) for a number of years – for example looking at ways to use cells to repair damage in the body, which is what I did.
It stands for Doctor of Philosophy, which is an old name that stuck even if you do the research in a different subject.
